Z-Level is a dissertation I wrote for my BSc Architectural Studies at University of Strathclyde. It focuses analyzing how video game environments can evoke emotions of Joy and Fear in the player through their design and architecture.
The paper describes the various types of fear and joy players can experience while playing video games and analyzes how they can be evoked solely or partly through the environment. Focus is put specifically on spatial proportions and arrangements, on level design symbols, and atmosphere.
